Les Rues de Paris by Christopher Broughton
.
Les rues de Paris focuses on the multitudes of independent humanistic narratives interacting within layers of time. The camera’s invasive and subjective nature begins within the frame and its ability to include or exclude. Its subjectivity ends there. Human interactions individually spontaneous and overlaid with time, allow true visual metaphors to be observed ever so briefly.
I'm Sorry You Couldn't Stay, Mughal Stonework, and Tidal Landscapes by Jean Morrison Phillips
By focusing on the intimate details of large spaces, photographer Jean Morrison Phillips brings the viewer into her world of quiet observations. These bodies of work were made during a period of significant personal challenges for the artist, including a long struggle with infertility, and, fortunately, the transition into parenthood. Creating these images provided a refuge and a chance to find beauty in the world during a difficult time.

Great Whites & Mermaids: The Underwater Photography of Ralph A. Clevenger
Thursday, February 14, 2019 at 7:00pm
$10 (SBMM Members) | $20 (Non-members)
Santa Barbara Maritime Museum
113 Harbor Way, Santa Barbara
What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than a date with “Great Whites & Mermaids?” A look back at some of Ralph Clevenger’s underwater adventures over the past 45 years, including an in-depth view of the underwater photography course he taught at Brooks Institute of Photography. Clevenger will show portfolios and share stories of his commercial assignments, stock photography, and personal work.
Ralph A. Clevenger grew up on the coast of North Africa and began diving in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea at the age of 7 with his father. In the early 60s, he was strongly influenced by Jacques-Yves Cousteau films and television shows on the underwater world and decided early on to become a marine biologist when he “grew up”. He eventually went on to study zoology and worked for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego as a diver/biologist before attending Brooks Institute of Photography. Clevenger was a senior faculty member at the Brooks Institute for 33 years, teaching courses in Natural History and Underwater Photography, among other photo and video courses.
Based in Santa Barbara, California, Clevenger is pursuing his passion for the natural world by specializing in location photography and video projects of eco-travel, environmental portraits, wildlife and undersea subjects. He’s traveled throughout the world on assignment for clients such as; Fox Sports, University of California, California State Parks, Denali National Park Wilderness Center, National Marine Sanctuaries, MacGillivray-Freeman Films, Light & Motion Industries, and others. His publication credits include; Audubon, Afar, Islands, Oceans, Nature’s Best, Outside, Orion Nature Quarterly, National Geographic, Terre Sauvage , and other national and international publications. He is the author of the book Photographing Nature , published by New Riders.
Ralph’s award-winning photography can be seen on his website: www.ralphclevenger.com, and you can follow his adventures on Instagram at ralphwildshot. He will be teaching Visualizing the Natural World, a class at our new Brooks at UCSB program.

Through-line: Brooks Institute, a culture for photographic education
Thursday, January 24, 2019 — Wednesday, March 6, 2019
Opening Reception: Friday, January 25, 5-7 pm
Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara Gallery
229 East Victoria Street, Santa Barbara, CA
We are proud to announce that three of our Brooks at UCSB instructors will be featured in this event presented by the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara. “Through-line: Brooks Institute, a culture for photographic education” is an exhibition which looks at the experience of the school through the art of three alumni who became educators, bringing with them pieces of the Brooks’ legacy to be passed on in their own classrooms.
For over 70 years Brooks Institute provided a visual arts education to an international gathering of students in Santa Barbara. Brooks was unique in its immersive focus on imaging arts—photography, film, photojournalism—and in its educational philosophy of hands-on learning provided by practitioners in their field.
Christopher Broughton, Christy Gutzeit and Ralph Clevenger came to Brooks with a passion for the art and craft of photography. What they encountered was an intangible mixture of location, pedagogy, and mentoring which fueled their unique professional paths. Through-line showcases moments from each photographer’s career. Christopher Broughton’s photographic black and white series, “Anhydrous—Our Unquenchable Thirst”, explores the anthropogenic landscape shaped by our endeavor to control water in the west. Ralph Clevenger exhibits a selection of work that demonstrates the connection between the photographer, the subject, and the viewer. In this case the subjects are animals from around the world, each animal’s portrait revealing a story in a single frame. Christy Gutzeit’s personal work is inspired by the ebb and flow of the ocean’s energy, calm one moment and forceful the next. Using multiple layers of materials combined with photography, she explores the transient nature of the waves of water and the power they have to imprint and erase.
Each of these image-makers has continued the legacy of their education by becoming educators themselves, teaching craft and professionalism while imparting their passion for photography to new generations of students. Currently, they are all part of a new collaboration established by The Ernest Brooks Foundation called “Brooks at UCSB” which is hosted by UC Santa Barbara’s Professional and Continuing Education department.
The Opening Reception with the artists will be held on Friday, January 25 from 5 - 7 pm. All are welcome. The AFSB Gallery is located in the historic Acheson House at the corner of Garden and East Victoria Streets in Santa Barbara. Regular gallery hours are Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and by appointment (please contact the Executive Director at 805-965-6307).

Face-to-Face with the Great Whites, Photography by Ralph Clevenger
Thursday, October 18, 2018 — Friday, March 1, 2019
Opening Reception: October 18
Santa Barbara Maritime Museum
113 Harbor Way, Ste 190, Santa Barbara, CA
Face-to-Face with the Great Whites is an exhibition of fine-art photography and videos of Great White Sharks off the coasts of Australia and Mexico. Working underwater and in submerged cages, Ralph Clevenger was able to take the dramatic images and provide viewers with an up-close view of these magnificent creatures. In Clevenger’s words, his photography better “allows us to understand them and helps to demystify their reputation as ‘ferocious man eaters.’”
A couple of short films will run during the exhibit to give viewers an idea of what it feels like to work inside the shark cages.
